As part of the Megatrends research project the CIPD have revealed that the number of workers leaving their employer fell two fifths between 1998 and 2012.

This is a trend that seems to have crept up on us. We have been told for a long time to expect the end of the ‘job for life’ and more frequent changes of employers and careers but the data appears to have been moving in the opposite direction.” - Mark Beatson, chief economist at the CIPD

New Guidance; Transitional Protection For Specialist Provision

In response to issues raised by Further Education institutions and specialist providers the Department for Education has introduced transitional protection for specialist provision to cope with reduced students placed in specialist provision.

The government will offer a level of protection for specialist provision in independent specialist providers (ISPs) and in eligible further education (FE) institutions over the next academic years.

“The purpose of transitional protection is to protect specialist provision for students with high-cost low-incidence high needs. It will be only be paid in instances where the numbers of high needs places commissioned by local authorities in the 2013 to 2014 academic year are fewer than in the 2012 to 2013 academic year. We have consulted with Natspec and AoC in developing our approach to transitional protection for institutions that may be affected by such reductions.”

Recommendations On Sustainability Skills for Growth

The Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) has made recommendations for the further education sector in their latest research report.

Effective energy and resource utilisation; contribution to sustainable business developments; and contributing to sustainable approaches, technologies, products and services were identified as the most important skills to support the UK in transition to a sustainable economy.

Key challenges faced by Further Education and Skills training providers include capacity building, awareness raising, developing a common understanding of sustainability, top-level support and funding.

 A summary of the key points  and recommendations includes:

  • A clear and consistent message should be given to the FE and Skills sector about what is meant by sustainability and what it means for the Sector and its stakeholders.
  • Sustainability should be made an integral part of FE and skills learning providers’ policy, strategy, curriculum and operations.
  • Generic skills (often called transferable skills) are as important as industry-specific skills in transition to a sustainable economy.
  • A strong sustainability focus should be developed and embedded into the internal and external quality monitoring processes and real guidance.

  • Awarding bodies should review the qualifications’ content and expected delivery methods in order to place a greater emphasis on environmental and social developments.
  • A representative body should be identified or created to guide and support sustainability  elated activity across the sector

59% More Jobs In The Construction Sector

The Association of Professional Staffing Companies (Saco) has analysed online recruitment data highlighting employment trends in the UK workforce.

The data shows a positive outlook with increased job placements for both permanent and temporary positions.

There is a sustained increase in demand professionals in the IT, Finance, Engineering and Marketing sectors, with a dramatic 59% increases in permanent jobs in contraction and property. Strong construction skills will be highlight sought after.

It is encouraging to see such an upswing in a sector that has suffered so much in the last few years,” commented Ann Swain Chief Executive of APSCo.

The on-going resilience of the engineering sector is obviously being driven by the huge increase in activity in the upstream oil and gas arena but as this is a global industry, the UK does have to compete heavily for talent with other locations – all of which need the same skill sets.”
